IGP Abdul Hamid Bador says a task force is investigating the mob which gathered outside a family gathering attended by Youth and Sports Minister Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman.

PETALING JAYA: Two people have been arrested over the mob incident in Ulu Tiram, Johor, when Youth and Sports Minister Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman was forced to leave a gathering through the rear exit of a restaurant.

Inspector-General of Police Abdul Hamid Bador said this evening that the two persons were believed to be the culprits.

“A task force has been set up to investigate the incident,” he said.Youth and Sports Minister Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman jumping over a fence after leaving a restaurant by the rear exit after an abusive crowd gathered outside.

The case will be investigated under four sections of the Penal Code, including for starting a provocation, assault and criminal intimidation.

Hamid also said the public should not politicise the incident by spreading baseless information. “I hope the public will abide by the law and do not act in any manner that creates provocation,” he said.

Home Minister Muhyiddin Yassin had earlier said that the government had instructed the police to take immediate action on the incident. Johor police said earlier that a task force had been set up to investigate.

Syed Saddiq was photographed climbing over a fence on Friday night as he was safely evacuated from the restaurant, where Syed Saddiq, members of his family and friends were at a dinner gathering.

A group of about 200, clad in black and red shirts, started a commotion outside, calling for Syed Saddiq to leave Johor.

Syed Saddiq lodged a police report on Friday night and criticised the action of those involved.
