MIRI: Two families that lived together and kept RM35,000 in cash in their kampung house lost RM8,000 in a fire this morning.

Fortunately, the firemen who rushed to the scene managed to save about RM28,000 of their money.

The fire broke out at around 9.30am at the double-storey house in Kpg Penekup, Ulu Mukah district in central Sarawak on Saturday morning (Feb 15).

Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department in its latest update said Bomba Mukah received an alert from the kampung folk.

"The Bomba station received the call around 9.26am. When the team arrived at the site, the fire was spreading.

"The Bomba team doused the flames completely by around 11.50am. There were 14 people in two families living in the house which was 100% burnt down.

"The Bomba team found RM28,000 in cash notes while dousing the flames.

"They gave the money back to the owners, who said there were more than RM35,000 kept in the house," said Bomba Sarawak.

The 14 people in the wooden house were aged between one and 73. They managed to escape the burning house without any serious injuries.

The cause of the fire is being probed.

Pictures taken by the fire-fighters showed the fire victims and firemen salvaging the cash from the rubbles.
