GEORGE TOWN (Bernama): Domestic maids by day and as sex workers by night – this is what some foreign women have been doing to earn additional income.

However, their activities wee uncovered by the Penang Immigration Department after a raid on a hotel on Jalan Transfer, here, at about 2am on Thursday (Feb 6).

Realising the presence of the enforcement authorities at the hotel, some of these foreign women tried to flee by using the emergency staircase, while a few hid in the hotel’s toilets.

Penang Immigration director, Muhammad Husni Mahmud said their attempt to escape failed as his officers had earlier stationed themselves around the hotel and managed to nab eight Vietnamese women.

"One of the women admitted working as a domestic helper with an employment agency in the day, but prostituting herself at night since early this year to supplement her income, ” he said.

Husni said the foreign women were charging RM150 to RM200 to each customer for their services.

The women, aged 20 to 35 years, were detained for misusing their social visit passes, overstaying and for having no permits to work in this country.

"During the raid, there were four local men at the scene and we recorded their statements to facilitate our investigations. We also ordered a man in his 40s, believed to be the women’s employer, to come to the Immigration office for further investigation," he added.

Muhammad Husni said his department also detained 10 Bangladeshi men and four male Indian nationals, all aged 26 to 48 years, in a raid on a ‘kongsi’ house at a construction site in Butterworth at 9pm on Wednesday (Feb 5) for committing various offences under the Immigration Act.

"We also detained four Thai men and a woman working as cooks or restaurant assistants at a tom yam restaurant in Bayan Lepas, for misusing their social visit passes and having no work permits.

"We also ordered the restaurant owner to appear at the Immigration office to assist in the investigation, ” he added. – Bernama
