SASHAYING their way around the pool in high heels, the 16 Miss Asia Global Malaysia 2019/2020 finalists exuded confidence and poise during the meet-the-press session of their pageant.

Penangite Christine Lee, 18, who is the youngest contestant, said she was excited to gain experience.

“I like the idea of taking part in beauty pageants. It helps me gain confidence and improve my skills.

“I also get to meet more people and learn something new, ” said the business diploma student at Hotel Equatorial Penang on Sunday.

Miss Asia Global national director (Malaysia) Alice Lee said this was the first time Malaysia was participating in the beauty pageant.

“The winner will go on to take part in the world finals in September next year and be up against young women from 39 other countries.

“We are elated that the Penang tourism, arts, culture and heritage committee is hosting us as beauty is synonymous with tourism in many ways.

“Being invited to collaborate with the committee has been great, ” she said.

Alice said that when choosing a winner to represent Malaysia, judges would not just consider appearance but also the contestants’ overall demeanour.

“They are all lovely girls who deserve to win but we must pick only one.

“The panel of judges will look for someone who is an all-rounder.

“We want someone who can adapt, be punctual, can follow instructions and have marvellous speaking skills.”

Alice said there would be a pre-judging round where contestants will meet the judges and then a final event.

Miss Asia Global Malaysia 2019/2020 is organised by the Penang tourism, arts, culture and heritage committee (Petach) with Pageant Coach and Promotions.

Petach committee chairman Yeoh Soon Hin said the winner would also become the ambassador of the state’s ‘Experience Penang 2020’ campaign.

“The 16 finalists aged between 18 and 27 will visit local attractions during their stay here before the contest ends on Oct 20, ” he said.
