MEXICO CITY : Victoria Kjær Theilvig of Denmark was crowned Miss Universe.
Kjaer, a qualified animal protection lawyer who works in the diamond sales business, edged out contestants from Nigeria at the 73rd Miss Universe finals in Mexico City.
Meanwhile, the home team finished third.
In that same tournament, Thailand's Suchata “Opal” Chuangsri took fourth place, while Venezuela's representative took the Top 5 position.
This is the first time a Danish contestant has won the Miss Universe crown.
The organizers said that there are more than 120 participants listed in the competition which aims to give recognition to beauties from all over the world.
In this edition, several countries sent participants for the first time, including Belarus, Eritrea, Guinea, Macau, Maldives, Moldova and Uzbekistan.
Malaysia did not miss out and sent participants represented by model and actress Sandra Lim.
This is the third time Mexico has hosted the Miss Universe pageant. - Agency
