Civil servants without integrity are not entitled to equal treatment from the government - PM Anwar
Anwar (centre) attended the Prime Minister's Monthly Meeting with Members of the Prime Minister's Department, in Putrajaya, on Monday.
PUTRAJAYA : Civil servants who do not have integrity do not deserve the same treatment from the government, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim stressed.
On the other hand, said the Prime Minister, the level of integrity of civil servants in this country must be commensurate with the recognition given to them by the government.
According to Anwar, based on the usual economic theory, any salary increase should be postponed until the economy of a country is more stable.
"But I see from MADANi's point of view, courtesy, level of efficiency, sustainability, how can we put the burden on civil servants, faults that are not all caused by them, sometimes in terms of management, negligence by other parties," he said.
He said this while delivering a message at the Prime Minister's Monthly Meeting with Members of the Prime Minister's Department, here, today.
At the same time, he urged all officers and members working in government offices to control all the activities of their colleagues to prevent any leaks.
"So I ask that while we give a rather radical shift in terms of giving recognition and rewards to civil servants, I ask the brothers to control their own departments and friends so that those who damage the good name of civil servants are identified.
"There is a small group that is corrupt, does not come to work, various problems. Should we give the same treatment to that small group, my answer is no, we will not give the same treatment," he said.
Also present were the Deputy Prime Ministers, Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof as well as the Chief Secretary, Tan Sri Mohd Zuki Ali.
On May 1, the Prime Minister announced that civil servants will enjoy a salary increase of more than 13 percent, which is the highest rate in the history of the country's public service, starting next December 1.
The civil servant salary adjustment will involve an allocation of more than RM10 billion following the largest and best increase in the country's history.
In another development, the Prime Minister is also expected to hold an online meeting with Google, today.
