PUTRAJAYA : The Election Commission (SPR) has set August 12 as the voting day for the State Election (PRN) and will be held simultaneously involving six states, namely Selangor, Negeri Sembilan, Penang, Kedah, Kelantan, and Terengganu.

Meanwhile, the date of candidate nomination and early voting are set for July 29 and August 8 respectively.

EC chairman, Tan Sri Abdul Ghani Salleh when announcing the important dates said more than 9.73 million eligible voters will carry out their responsibilities in the PRN in the six states concerned.



The General Election Voters List (DPPR) used is the latest voter list so that the April 2023 Supplementary Voters List, which is updated until June 21, 2023, he said.

"Accordingly, the EC decided that a 15th PRN should be held to fill the vacancies in the following council seats: 36 seats in the Kedah state assembly (DUN), 45 seats in the Kelantan state assembly, 32 seats in the Terengganu state assembly, 40 seats in the Penang state assembly, 56 seats in the Selangor state assembly and 36 Negeri Sembilan state assembly seats.

"For the purpose of conducting the PRN, the SPR has set important dates as follows:

"The writ's release date is July 5; nomination day July 29 (Saturday); early voting day on August 8 (Tuesday) and voting day on August 12 (Saturday)," he said in a PRN press conference at Menara SPR, here, on Wednesday.

Earlier, Abdul Ghani chaired the EC Special Meeting to determine the important dates of the PRN after the commission received the notice of the official dissolution of the six state state assemblies from their respective state assembly speakers.

According to Abdul Ghani, of the total number of voters, a total of 9,674,456 people are ordinary voters; 49,660 (military plus spouse); 47,728 (police and spouse, General Operations Police (PGA)); as well as 1,727 Absentee Voters Abroad.

In the meantime, he said the set campaigning period is for 14 days starting after the declaration of the candidates running on 29 July, until 11.59pm, 11 August 2023 (FRI).

Abdul Ghani added that the cost of implementing PRN in the six states involved is estimated at RM420 million.

"A total of 173 Candidate Nomination Centers (PPC) and 186 Official Vote Totaling Centers (PPRU) will be used.

"A total of 153,760 officers will be appointed to handle the 15th PRN process. Meanwhile, a total of 3,190 normal polling stations will be used.

"It contains 17,048 polling stations/channels and 260 early voting centers for voting which contains 377 polling stations/early channels.

"The total number of voting centers is 3,450 with 17,425 polling stations/channels," he added.

Previously, the media reported that Selangor officially dissolved the state assembly on June 23 to make way for the PRN.

Meanwhile, Kelantan dissolved the state assembly on June 22; Terengganu, Penang and Kedah respectively on June 28; while Negeri Sembilan on July 1.

A total of 245 state assembly seats involving six states will be contested in this PRN.
