KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 15 -- Convention and Exhibition (C&E) Member Advisory Council (MAC) of the World Trade Centres Association (WTCA) chairman Datuk Seri Dr Irmohizam Ibrahim aims to rejuvenate the Meetings, Incentives, Conventions and Exhibitions (MICE) and Business Events (BE) industry that has been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Irmohizam, who was recently appointed as the inaugural chairman of C&E MAC WTCA, has several plans for that purpose, including conducting conferences such as business and trade events via hybrid methods, namely physically and virtually.

"This initiative is important to make the industry resistant to any changes that may occur in the future," he told Bernama, here, recently.

According to Irmohizam, who hails from Kampung Kuantan, Kuala Selangor, which is famous as a world destination for fireflies, the MICE and BE sectors need new innovation so that they do not shrink when faced with global challenges.

Irmohizam, who is also World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur (WTCKL) group managing director, said WTCA members need to be able to adapt accordingly to the current situation as well as to hold continuous dialogue to exchange thoughts and ideas.

“For example, WTCKL itself is undergoing transformation as a mega vaccination centre (PPV) in this period in support of government’s policies and to create a comfortable space for the people. This is the agility that we try to ensure exists in the organisation (WTCA),” he said.

Irmohizam, who holds a Doctorate (PhD) of Philosophy in Education (Adult and Professional Development) from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), said to revive exhibition and convention business events at WTCKL, it provided outside catering services, promoted creative space at WTCKL as well as organised wedding events.

“As a network, we will continue to strengthen cooperation, and I will place 110 per cent commitment to revive this industry together with other member countries.

"I am also committed to ensuring that my views and ideas remain relevant, innovative, and have the ability to spread their wings around the world," he added.

In a statement on Jan 11, WTCKL said Irmohizam was unanimously chosen as the first individual to be the chairman of the C&E MAC WTCA, headquartered in New York for a period of two years.

WTCA previously divided C&E MAC into several regions namely the Asia-Pacific; Americas; and Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA), but now it is merged into a global group to increase participation in business events, exhibitions and conventions from 326 members of the association.
