TANGKAK: A man of Rohingya descent called Long Tiger is now wanted by the police after escaping from the Tangkak Magistrate's Court lockup, today.
Tangkak District Police Chief, Superintendent Mohd. Fadhil Minhat said the suspect named Abdul Hamim Ab. Hamid, 32, escaped through the main gate of the court at 11.55am before the trial began.
“The suspect was taken from Sungai Udang Prison, Melaka yesterday for a trial under Section 388 of the Penal Code.
“However, the proceedings which were supposed to start at 10 am were postponed while waiting for the presence of the accused's lawyer.
"Several policemen who brought the suspect to court realized that the accused was trying to escape when they saw him coming out of the main door of the court towards the fence," he said in a press conference.
According to Mohd. Fadhil, four policemen involved with security guards tried to chase the suspect but he went into a nearby bush and could not be found
"The distance between the suspect and the policeman was too far, making it difficult for him to be arrested. The suspect went into nearby bush whilst still being handcuffed.
“Apart from roadblocks, efforts to track down the suspect are being carried out by the police and the K9 tracking dog service,” said Tangkak district police chief Mohd Fadhil Minhat
"Therefore, we request the cooperation of the public who see the suspect or have information on the location of the accused to immediately contact the police.
Members of the public who have information can report it to the nearest police station or contact the Tangkak District Police Headquarters (IPD) at 06-978 1222, Tangkak IPD Hotline 06-978 5222 or any IPD.
"In this case, several policemen who were responsible for escorting the suspect to court will also be investigated under Section 233 for negligence," he said.
Mohd. Fadhil said, his party is still investigating all the members who were involved in this incident or otherwise as well as how the accused escaped from the court cell.
He added that the accused still has a case in the Muar Sessions Court for a rape charge under Section 376 of the Penal Code is currently being investigated under Section 224 of the same code for running away from detention.
"The suspect is a bald man with a height of about 160 centimeters and a weight of about 65 kilograms wearing a pagoda shirt and brown trousers," he said.
