ZAMBOANGA CITY: Undercover police, backed by soldiers, shot dead a Malaysian drug dealer and his Filipino cohort in a sting operation at a coastal village in the southern Philippine province of Tawi-Tawi over the weekend, officials said on Sunday.

Police BGen. Remus Medina, chief of the Drug Enforcement Group, said the weekend fighting killed Hari Man bin Sabtula, a native of Sabah, and Nadzmil Ladja, a resident of Sitangkai town in Tawi-Tawi, after they resisted arrest and engaged the policemen and soldiers in a gunfight in Pahut village in the capital town of Bongao.

He added that during the operation, they recovered some 1.5 kilos of shabu or crystal meth and marijuana worth nearly P11 million and two.45-caliber pistols and identification cards of the slain dealers, including their speedboat.

Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Gen. Guillermo Eleazar also quoted Medina's report, saying, "The shootout erupted when the police-military team was effecting the arrest of the two suspects for alleged drug trafficking during a sting operation."

"Anti-illegal drugs operations will continue without letup even as the PNP remains preoccupied with law enforcement and public safety duties in response to the Covid-19 health crisis and general anti-criminality and internal security operations," he added.

The Malaysian Embassy has not issued any statement on the slaying of Hari, on his involvement in the illegal drug trade or on whether he smuggled the crystal meth into Tawi-Tawi from Sabah, which was just several hours by boat from the Malaysian state.
