GEORGE TOWN, Feb 9 -- An unemployed man pleaded not guilty at the Sessions Court here today to a charge of sharing and initiating the transmission of offensive content on a Facebook page three years ago.

K. Haridas, 40, from Taman Pasir Mas, Seremban, Negeri Sembilan, was charged with knowingly making and initiating the sharing of an offensive content entitled ‘Talk GE14-Part 11 #Vote For PH #Kick Out BN “So Many Dummy Police Officers In Malaysia" from the website www.makklada.org with the intent to offend those reading it.

The accused was charged with committing the offence on the Defend People's Rights Group Facebook page on March 26 at about 12.37 pm at Asia Heights, Lorong Semarak Api 3, 11500 Ayer Itam.

The charge is framed under Section 233 (1) (a) of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 which carries a maximum fine of RM50,000 or a jail term not exceeding one year or both, upon conviction.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Nabila Huda Muhammad Nazim urged the court to set bail at not less than RM30,000 with one surety, but the accused pleaded for a lower bail as he was jobless.

Judge Norsalha Datuk Hamzah then set bail at RM20,000 with one surety and told the accused not to upload any more postings onto the page.

The court fixed March 11 for mention for the handing over of documents.
