PETALING JAYA: YTL Corp Bhd’s executive chairman Tan Sri Francis Yeoh (pic) has been conferred the award of honorary Knight of the British Empire by the United Kingdom’s (UK) Queen Elizabeth II that carries the title “Sir”.

According to an internal company circular, the title was bestowed on Yeoh recently for helping to improve the UK-Malaysian bilateral relations.Prince Charles performed the ceremony at the Clarence House on Oct 13 last year, it said.

Yeoh said he felt humbled and honoured by the award. He had attributed it also to the hard work of his employees in the YTL Group, both in the UK and Malaysia.

The YTL Group has had engagements with the UK, which began with the Nucleus Hospitals project in 1989, that was built with a British Aid grant to the Malaysian government.

The group, through its listed subsidiary YTL Power International Bhd, is also the biggest Malaysian investor in UK since its whole acquisition of Wessex Water Ltd from Enron in 2002.

YTL Power’s managing director Datuk Yeoh Seok Hong told The Star that the recognition conferred on Francis was a heart-warming gesture by the British government.

“It is quite heartening to know that the British government welcomes and recognises our investments in the UK, ” Seok Hong said.

Wessex Water has over time since the acquisition been consistently rated as one of the top performing Water and Sewerage Companies by the UK’s water industry’s regulator. It also won the Queen’s Award for Sustainability three times.

YTL also owns and operates several award-winning luxury hotels in the UK, including the Gainsborough Hotel, Monkey Island Estate and The Academy Hotel in London.
