SEREMBAN: Police have been urged to act against a man who was seen in a viral video clip mercilessly beating a dog with a piece of wood.

State Women, Family and Welfare Committee chairman Nicole Tan said the man's actions were unacceptable.

"I am extremely saddened by his actions and he should be made to face the consequences.

"It is my hope that the courts would also mete out punishment accordingly if found guilty," she said on Sunday (Feb 9).

In the five-second clip, the man could be seen hitting the animal which was tied with a chain in a house.

The incident apparently took place in a low-cost housing scheme in Lukut near here on Saturday (Feb 8) evening.

Tan said she had been told that the police were now probing the incident.

"There are provisions in the Animal Welfare Act 2015 against animal abuse.

"The courts have acted against such offenders before which include a man who was found guilty for locking a pregnant cat in a dryer and ultimately causing its death," she said.

Tan said the dog did not deserve to be beaten.

"It may have barked at the suspect as she may have been protecting her owner's house or her pups.

"How could this have offended the suspect?" she asked.

Furrykids Safehaven, a shelter for strays here had in a Facebook post, said two dogs were attacked in the incident.

It claimed that the suspect began hitting the dogs even before the incident was recorded.

The female dog suffered injuries to its face and eyes, while a male dog sustained injuries near its ear.

The animals were taken to a veterinarian.
