Two shop lots in Penang destroyed by fire; fireman hurt

GEORGE TOWN: A fireman was hurt when fire destroyed two shop houses at Carnarvon Street on Wednesday (Feb 12) night.
The fire, which began around 9pm, destroyed 70% of the shop lots before it was brought under control by firemen from the Fire and Rescue Services from Beach Street and Bagan Jermal.
A Fire and Rescue Services personnel was injured when he fell during the rescue operation.
Residents of an old folks home, which was six metres away from the burning building, was evacuated and brought to safety.
A department spokesman said no one in the shop lots were hurt during the fire, including the residents of the old folks home.
The fire was brought under control within 25 minutes, and the cause is being investigated.
