39 Bersatu division chiefs win party polls uncontested

PETALING JAYA: The inaugural Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia branch and divisional polls will see a scramble for more than 7,000 positions.
At the close of nominations for branch and divisions on Jan 26,9, 452 party members were qualified to contest for 7,371 positions.
At the divisions, 39 of the 189 heads have been returned unopposed.
A total of 45 division Srikandi chiefs also retained their posts, with 63 division Armada chiefs winning uncontested.
“We received 11,100 nomination forms in total. The full list of candidates will be announced by the various state Bersatu chiefs, ” party Election Committee chairman Tan Sri Syed Hamid Albar (pic) told a press conference at the party headquarters here yesterday.
He said the big names who managed to win uncontested were Bersatu chairman and Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad in Langkawi, and party president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin in Pagoh.
Others included party secretary-general and Deputy Foreign Minister Datuk Marzuki Yahya (Bagan), Youth and Sports Minister Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman (Muar), information chief and Deputy Economic Affairs Minister Datuk Radzi Jidin (Ketereh), and Perak Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Ahmad Faizal Azumu (Tambun).
All are incumbents of the Bersatu supreme council and are expected to defend their party posts in March.
He said those who were suspended were not eligible to contest, referring to Dengkil assemblyman Adhif Syan Abdullah who has been suspended as Selangor Bersatu Armada chief.
Adhif was arrested during a drug raid last month along with 16 others.
Syed Hamid said all branches were expected to conclude their polls and meetings by March 29.
“It is a one-man, one-vote system and for the posts of branch committees, the vote will be by a show of hands. For the division chief and division committees, the vote will be by secret ballot, ” he added.
Nominations for Bersatu supreme council positions will open on March 16, and the party annual general meeting will be held from June 25-28.
For the top three supreme council posts, only those with three years’ membership can contest. As for the rest of the positions, it is open to those who have been members for a year or more.
Bersatu currently has 363,131 members nationwide with 2,950 branches.
