BUKIT MERTAJAM: Workers from the Seberang Prai Municipal Council (MPSP) never expected that catfishes were the cause of a clogged drain at the Jalan Pasar market here.
As workers flushed the drain with a high pressure spray, they were surprised to find dozens of catfishes washed out from the hiding place, prompting foreigners to rush and collect them with nets.
A 29-second video showing people collecting the fishes in a net tray has since gone viral on social media.
MPSP president Datuk Rozali Mohamud said during the incident on Wednesday (July 3), the fishes are believed to have escaped from the buckets of fishmongers before finding their way through the openings of the covered drain.
"When workers from the council pumped debris out with the pressure spray, the fishes were pushed out.
"The public including Nepalese workers at the scene quickly grabbed buckets to trap the fishes," he said.
It is uncertain whether the fishes were later sold, disposed or released.
