PUTRAJAYA: The Federal Government will override Johor’s policy to maintain the definition of youth as “someone up to 40 years old’’ if it is found that the decision was made under the influence of the palace, says Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

“The palace has no right to interfere. If we find that this is the result of palace interference, we will override it,” the Prime Minister said, adding that Johor Mentri Besar Datuk Dr Sahruddin Jamal had not given his official explanation on the issue.

Johor has decided to maintain the maximum age of youth at 40 despite the Federal Government lowering the age limit to 30.

“On the Goods and Services Tax (GST) refund, the government wants to see where the RM19bil is despite the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) saying that the money is not stolen,” said Dr Mahathir after chairing the Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia supreme council meeting yesterday.

“If the money is not missing, then the government wants to know where it is. If we can find it, then it is not missing. If we cannot find, then it is missing.”

In its report tabled in Parliament yesterday, the PAC concluded that the Barisan Nasional government had not stolen the money, as alleged by Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng.

The report said the shortfall was due to an overestimation of nett GST receipts by about 65% under the previous government.
