KUALA LUMPUR: The police have arrested a member of the Islamic Propagation and Welfare Organisation of Malaysia (Pekida) over an alleged death threat against Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

The 38-year-old man, who had allegedly threatened to shoot Mahathir, was arrested at Jalan Beverly Heights, Ampang, here, at 4.40am last Saturday. He is being held on remand until June 6 to assist in the investigation, Inspector-General of Police Mohamad Fuzi Harun said today.

In a statement, he said the man was arrested following a complaint by the Selangor Pekida secretary on May 31 about an article on social media pertaining to the death threat.

“However, the suspect claimed that his Facebook account had been breached by some irresponsible people,” Fuzi added.

He said the case was being investigated under Section 506 of the Penal Code for criminal intimidation and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 for improper use of network facilities or network services.
