TOKYO: Malaysia has requested for yen credit from Japan to help resolve its debt problems, said the Prime Minister.

The request was made during Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad's meeting with his Japanese counterpart, Shinzo Abe.

"Japan has agreed to study the request," he said in a joint press conference with Abe after the meeting here on Tuesday (June 12).

In May, Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng confirmed that Malaysia's debt reached RM1 trillion.

Dr Mahathir Mohamad also said there were also many areas for Malaysia and Japan to work on under the Look East Policy, including setting up a branch of a Japanese university.

Both countries also expressed hope over the success of the Trump-Kim Summit in Singapore.

Dr Mahathir Mohamad said for the summit to yield positive results, both sides must be prepared to give in on certain issues.

"Expecting one side to only give in will not see good results," he added.
