Help nab traffic violators with your phone camera

PETALING JAYA: Spot someone abusing the highway emergency lane during the balik kampung exodus? Take a picture showing the vehicle registration number and email it with the details to PLUS Malaysia Bhd.

A notice and summons will then be issued to the vehicle owner by the Road Transport Department (JPJ).


Transport Minister Anthony Loke said highway authorities were collaborating with JPJ to monitor traffic through the multiple closed-circuit cameras along the roads.

“The live feed will be monitored by both JPJ and highway authorities, who will feed us information on vehicle registration numbers so we can issue summonses.


“Photos and evidence sent in by the public will also be taken into account. So, send in the details of such incidents to aduantrafik@jpj.gov.my,” he told reporters after joining a PLUS air traffic monitoring trip on a helicopter yesterday.

PLUS Highway alone has about 1,500 cameras placed every 10km or so.

In the Ops Bersepadu that began on June 8, Loke said there were already 83 summonses issued for abusing the emergency lane.

“Please do not misuse the lane as you could be delaying services such as the ambulance and police.

“Don’t think it’s all right to use the lane if you don’t see a police or highway patrol car. The cameras are watching,” he warned.

On the balik kampung exodus, Loke said PLUS was offering a 50% discount on toll rates for two days of peak travel period (yesterday and today).

Travellers will notice that the discount is applicable immediately, unlike previous toll rebate systems that reimbursed the amount to the Touch ’n Go cards after the travel period.

Loke also observed that during Ops Bersepadu, accident rates had gone down compared to the same period last year.

“On PLUS Highway alone, we have had only two fatal accidents so far, compared to 14 last year.

“I also urge heavy vehicles to abide by the ruling issued by the highway authorities and not access the highways on the two days before Hari Raya, unless an exemption has been granted,” he added.

Bernama reported slow traffic flow on several major expressways as at 5pm yesterday because of the balik kampung exodus.

A spokesman at the Malaysian Highway Authority (MHA) said traffic on East Coast Expressway 1 and 2 was under control.
