Two cops and woman hurt after car hits police vehicle

GEORGE TOWN: A woman and two policemen were hurt when her car crashed into a police car at the junction of Lebuhraya Thean Tek-Jalan Thean Tek in Bandar Baru Air Itam.
The woman driver hurt her leg and hand while the policemen sustained minor injuries in the accident which occurred at about 8.30am yesterday.
All three received outpatient treatment at Penang Hospital.
George Town OCPD Asst Comm Anuar Omar said three police cars were rushing to Taman Semarak Api in Bandar Baru Air Itam in response to a robbery case when the accident happened.
“Suddenly, a woman driver who came from another direction rammed the stationary police car,” he said when contacted yesterday.
He said Korperal Mohd Ifwat Faiz Azmi, who was the passenger, sustained a concussion while the driver Koperal Khairul Nizar injured his leg and right ribs.
ACP Anuar added that the other police cars managed to reach the crime scene.
He also refuted rumours that the police had fired shots in the incident.
The woman driver, who wished to be known as Yap, 52, claimed she did not hear the siren from the police vehicles.
“The light was green for me as I was driving in the direction from Lebuhraya Thean Tek towards Paya Terubong.
“I just drove pass the traffic light without realising that there was a police car in the middle of the road,” she claimed when met at the hospital.
