GEORGE TOWN, Sept 8 — A routine police patrol early today turned into a high speed car chase and an exchange of gunfire that ended killing the suspect.

According to the police, in the 1.30am incident, the masked suspect was chased through the winding roads towards Balik Pulau after he shot at a patrol car when they tried to stop him.

The chase ended at Jalan Genting, Balik Pulau, when the car stopped there as the driver continued shooting at the patrol car.

An exchange of fire ensued and when the shots stopped, the police inspected the car and found the suspect dead from several shot wounds.

Penang police chief Comm Datuk Abdul Ghafar Rajab said the team of five policemen were patrolling Jalan Teluk Kumbar when they came across the suspect who was wearing a black ski mask.

“We found that suspicious so we stopped the car and as our officers went to check, the driver fired shots at them and sped off,” he said in a press conference at the Penang police headquarters here.

He said the patrol car gave chase until they reached Genting Road in Balik Pulau where the exchange of fire followed.

“The suspect was found dead still wearing the black ski mask and upon inspection of the suspect, we found a Glock pistol with a magazine and two remaining bullets.”

“We also found 29 other .38 bullets and one auto .45 bullet,” he said.

The suspect, whose body was sent for a post mortem, was identified as 44-year-old Khor Hock Yong from Bukit Mertajam.

“He had five previous criminal records, which included criminal intimidation, and he is believed to be a member of a local triad,” Abdul Ghafar said.

He said Khor, who had tested positive for drugs, had shot eight times at the patrol car throughout the incident, but fortunately no police officers were injured.

The police are now investigating Khor's links to a local gang and also checking his current home address for other possible leads.
