IPOH: Perak police today rescued 17 people including four children and a baby who were believed to have been exploited by a syndicate into becoming beggars around Ipoh.
They were rescued after police detained a 31-year-old man at the Greentown Business Centre at 12.15am today (Tuesday).
Perak Criminal Investigations Department (CID) chief Datuk Gan Tian Kee said the arrest was made based on police surveillance work.
Police had tailed an MPV which was transporting the women, who were used as foreign beggars around the business centre.
"We tailed the vehicle which led us to a house at Taman Sri Berjaya, where we arrested the man. Checks revealed three Indonesian women in the vehicle," he said.
He said eight women were picked up outside the house. They appeared to be in a weakened state.
"We questioned them and this led us to another house in Chemor. There, we rescued an Indonesian woman and four children aged between 10-months-old and five-years-old," he said.
He said police seized the vehicle used by the syndicate, cash totaling RM2,689, a passport, and two birth certificates believed to be fake.
He said the case is being investigated under Section 44 of the Anti-Trafficking in Persons and Anti-Smuggling of Migrants Act (ATIP-SOM) 2007.
