Cabbie roughs up council officer over clamping

THE STAR
GEORGE TOWN: A Penang Island City Council (MBPP) enforcement officer was roughed up by a cabbie after he clamped the taxi’s tyre near the Anjung Gurney hawker centre.
The incident occurred when Muhd Hilmi Mohd Ismail, 28, was on duty with two colleagues near the roundabout in Gurney Drive at about 8pm on Friday.
Muhd Hilmi, an enforcement officer of three years, said he told the taxi driver three times to move his vehicle.
“Instead, the driver threatened me. ‘You do not know who I am. I know people in high positions. You will know me when you come back again’,” he said.
“We then clamped the taxi’s tyre after the driver, who was seated inside, refused to move his taxi. He then came out and assaulted me,” said Muhd Hilmi.
He said the taxi driver grabbed him by the neck and arms and dragged him across the road to the MBPP pick-up parked near the promenade. Muhd Hilmi added that when police arrived the taxi driver let him go and paid the fine.
A video footage of the incident, taken by Muhd Hilmi’s colleague Muhd Aiman Jamaluddin, was shown to the media during the press conference.
The clip showed a man in a white T-shirt grabbing and dragging Muhd Hilmi, as one of his colleagues tried to intervene.
Muhd Hilmi lodged a police report about the incident.
