PORT DICKSON: The festivity at a funfair at the usually packed PD Waterfront here has been brought to an abrupt halt after a carousel collapsed and injured three revellers.
Port Dickson Municipal Council president Datuk Ab Khalid Mat said the organisers had been slapped with a temporary closure order.
“We want a report on what caused the accident,” he said.
The funfair has been running at the popular tourist spot since Nov 1 and scheduled to end this month.
The three were riding on the merry-go-round when the incident occurred early yesterday.
Fire and Rescue Services Department senior officer Sulong Addin said his team rushed to the area after receiving a call at 12.06am.
“When we arrived, we saw a woman in her buggy pinned to the fallen roof about 3m up.
“Her buggy got entangled with wires when the structure came down,” he said.
He said his men used a ladder to reach the victim, identified as Hawa Liana Kamarudin Bashah, 21, who suffered a broken left leg and sustained other injuries.
She was rushed to the Port Dickson Hospital, where she is in a stable condition.
Two others – Abdul Rahman Mohamad, 35, and Nor Aminur Rashid Nor Hisham, 17, – were given outpatient treatment.
“The two guys were flung out of their buggies but escaped serious injuries,” said Sulong.
Port Dickson OCPD Supt Baharudin Mustapha said several people would be called in to have their statements recorded.
“Preliminary investigations showed there was no criminal element involved.
“However, we will be calling several people before we complete our probe,” he said.
A resident, who wished to remain anonymous, said there could have been more casualties if the incident had occurred a few hours earlier.
“I cringed to imagine the consequences as the PD Waterfront area is always packed with holidaymakers,” he said, adding that the number of tourists swelled during the school holidays.
Tourist P. Harinderan, 36, said he hoped the authorities would take stern action against those found negligent in erecting the structure.
“This is important because people need to know if these rides are safe,” he added
