Two hurt in brawl at Kota Raya
KUALA LUMPUR: Two people were injured at the Kota Raya Complex after a brawl broke out between workers at a mobile phone shop and about 20 people claiming to have been scammed by the shop.
Police said the situation is now under control and were on the lookout for the suspects who had sparked the trouble at about 5pm, Sunday.
It was reported that Muslim Consumers Association of Malaysia (PPIM) had held a press conference outside the shop and demanded refunds for those that had been allegedly cheated by the operators.
Dang Wangi CID chief Deputy Supt M Gunalan, however, said it is believed that the brawlers were an entirely separate group.
"They came shortly after the group held a press conference outside the shop to demand refunds. There were about 20 men who came with sticks and helmets and got into a fight with about eight workers in the shop.
"From what we can see, only one table was smashed by the brawlers and a few handphones are missing. Those injured are being treated for minor bruises at the Tung Shin Hospital," DSP Gunalan said.
Furore over the shop erupted online after a customer was alleged to have been forced to pay RM10,000 for four phones, after he was only promised that he’d only have to pay RM800 for the lot.
Mohd Ali Baharom, or more commonly known as Ali Tinju, then led a "red shirt" group outside Kota Raya last Friday and demanded a boycott of the shopping centre.
PPIM had, however, publicly distanced itself from Ali Tinju, saying the matter was a consumer issue and not than a racial one.

Kota Raya closed following fight over mobile phone

KUALA LUMPUR: Kompleks Kota Raya was closed Sunday afternoon following a fight over the sale of a mobile phone.
It is learnt that the fight, which occurred at about 4.55pm, erupted when a number of customers, some armed with parang, returned to the complex seeking a refund for the phone.
It is understood that the management of the shopping complex decided to bring down the shutters and close the building to avoid further incidents.
Police were seen patrolling the surrounding area later in the evening.When contacted, City CID chief Senior Asst Comm Datuk Zainuddin Ahmad said police were still investigating the incident.
