Best Fried Chicken in KL

Best Ayam Goreng in KL
Crispy fried chicken has many fans everywhere and in a rich food culture like Malaysia, there are many renditions to woo the stomach. Fried chicken is often the trusty sidekick to nasi lemak, nasi kandar and nasi kukus. You can even find it starring in chicken rice, pushing aside the traditional poached chicken. Fried chicken needs to be prepared a la minute from fresh poultry to yield a divine combination of crispy skin and juicy meat.

In Subang Jaya, Lim Fried Chicken is giving fast food chains a run for its chickens. Long queues form daily at the stall, as people wait for freshly fried chicken to be eaten with the stall’s Chinese-styled nasi lemak. The secret is freshly slaughtered chicken and the perfect control of the hot oil to yield the fried chicken winner. Variety is also the spice of life, as usually restaurants only serve a limited variety of chicken thighs, drumsticks and the wings.

With Winners Fried Chicken in Pudu, it s all about a beak-to-tail philosophy probably fuelled by some inborn thriftiness. This stall located in busy Pudu fries up rarely used parts such as chicken feet, gizzards and even the bishop’s nose. This particular part is prized for the soft fatty texture. Sometimes it all boils down to the type of chicken.

The Malays prefer the Ayam Kampung or village chicken. These small scrawny chickens keep lean and mean since they wander around the village. They are prized for their tasty meat and leaner limbs, minus fat.

In Restoran A.Hassan, everyone flocks here for their Ayam Kampung Goreng. Usually this is eaten with rice and a selection of curries and other cooked dishes. The chicken without its skin may look like a plain Jane but you will be hooked once you bite into its lightly salted meat.

You find something similar at Nasi Padang restaurants. Indonesian based Sari Ratu Restaurant dresses up the scrawny fried chickens with a sprinkle of deep-fried herbs to boost their flavour.

Similarly, Nasi Kandar Zainul serves their fried chicken pieces with crunchy bits, or what is called kerak or crust. The tiny deep-fried crisps are delicious when mixed with rice and a dash of curry at the busy stall in Petaling Jaya. This stall also has the distinction of serving one of the largest chicken pieces for a hefty RM7.50 per piece.

Enhancement seems to be the name of the game, as seen with the Ayam Madu served at Gerai Zaburallah. This deep-fried chicken is drizzled with a thick sweet sauce made with honey and infused with spices like cardamom, star anise and cinnamon.

The Nyonyas take a different approach with their iconic Inche Kabin, as seen in Penang’sNyonya Breeze. The dark brown chicken pieces marinated in spices are double fried for a crispy bite. But when it comes to fried chicken, sometimes less is best. In the case of the finger-licking chicken wings from Seong Kee Yong Tau Foo, it only needs a touch of turmeric to make it a memorable must-eat.
