PETALING JAYA: Donate items that can be consumed easily without having the need to use other utensils, Malaysian Red Crescent Society vice-chairman Datuk Dr Bahari Datuk Abu Mansor told donors.
He said it was heartwarming to see countless kind-hearted Malaysians donating food and clothing.
“But, at this point in time, the victims need specific food items,” said the national disaster management head.
“We received a lot of instant noodles but the victims there don’t have electricity supply to boil water,” Bahari said.
He also cited the example of three-in-one beverages.
“The victims do not have utensils with them nor hot water to make the drinks,” Bahari said.
“It would be better if they receive canned food that can be opened without a can opener or biscuits and drinks that can be consumed immediately,” he said.
Nevertheless, Bahari assured that the rice, cooking oil, sugar and other items donated would be used once electricity supply had been restored.
“For now, the victims need candles, matches and mosquito coils at the relief centres. They also need brooms and detergent to clean their houses as the water has receded,” he added.
Bahari also said that they received old clothing from people.
“These are not a necessity for now,” he said.
“It is not nice to give those that are too worn out,” he added.
“One just needs to put themselves in their situation,” Bahari said.
“Think of what they may need now when they are without clean water and electricity.”
