DHAKA: Bangladesh's only Nobel Prize winner Muhammad Yunus will lead the country's transitional government following the resignation of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Anadolu Agency (AA) reported citing an official statement on Tuesday evening.

The decision confirmed by presidential press secretary Joynal Abedin was reached in a meeting involving President Mohammad Shahabuddin, the head of the armed forces and the leader of the Bangladesh Anti-Discrimination Student Movement.

On Tuesday evening, 13 coordinators of the movement visited the official residence of the president to discuss the situation and framework of the interim government with Shahabuddin.

Later, the head of the land, sea and air forces also participated.

The decision to form an interim government was made after discussions between Shahabuddin, the coordinator and the military leaders.

Sheikh Hasina resigned as prime minister and fled to neighboring India on Monday. The cabinet was dissolved soon after.

Following the resignation of the prime minister, Bangladesh army chief General Waker-Uz-Zaman announced a transitional government would be formed to govern the country.

On Tuesday, Shahabuddin also dissolved the country's parliament.
