Grab said that it was never informed or consulted about the open letter to the Prime Minister regarding the implementation of the regulatory framework for Internet and social media ordering services.

KUALA LUMPUR : Grab was not involved in the open letter of the Asia Internet Coalition (AIC) which suggested that the government consider the implementation of a regulatory framework for Internet ordering services and social media.

Grab in a statement on Monday said that it was never informed or consulted about the open letter to the Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim on the matter.

In fact, the proposal presented had no impact on Grab's operations and the company was not involved.

"We don't want to comment on that.

"We remain committed to working with the government in contributing to the development of the country," he said in a statement on Monday.

AIC, the Association representing leading internet and technology companies voiced concern over the government's planned move on licensing for social media platforms.

Its Managing Director, Jeff Paine said, his party strives to encourage dialogue between the public and private sectors throughout the Asia-Pacific region on internet policy issues and best practices, especially in relation to the growing digital economy.

“We believe this licensing framework is unworkable for the industry and will adversely affect innovation by placing an undue burden on business.

"It will deter continued and future investment due to the complexity and cost of compliance," he said.
