WARSAW: Kylian Mbappe could not have expected a better start to his Real Madrid career when he scored the opening goal to help his new side win the UEFA Super Cup on Wednesday.
Mbappe fired the ball into the top corner from Jude Bellingham's pass to double Real's lead in a 2-0 win over Atalanta.
"Before the game, we didn't even talk about (whether he was going to score), we just expected it to happen," Bellingham's man of the match told reporters.
"He's the kind of player who writes his own history... many times, he delivers for his team and he did it again tonight."
Mbappe, who scored 44 goals for Paris St Germain last season, lifted his first European trophy after winning seven Ligue 1 titles with PSG and Monaco.
He previously came closest to European success in 2019-20, when PSG crashed out of the Champions League after losing 1-0 to Bayern Munich in the final.
"Mbappe played very well, he adapted well to the team," said Real coach Carlo Ancelotti.
"He combines well with Vinicius Junior and with Bellingham. Of course, we have a lot of quality, but we have to play together and we did that tonight."
After posing happily with his first trophy, Mbappe appeared overcome with emotion.
"It was a great night. It was a great moment for me. And we won the championship, which is important - in Madrid you always have to win," he said.
"I'm very happy. And with the goal too - it's important for a striker like me. But the most important thing is to have fun playing with this team."
Mbappe also helped Ancelotti become the coach who brought Real Madrid the most trophies, the Italian equaling the 14 held by Miguel Munoz who managed the Spanish giants from 1948-58. - Agency
