PUTRAJAYA: The Immigration Department (JIM) successfully busted a human smuggling syndicate after arresting eight Bangladeshi nationals in an operation at a residential premises in Jalan Sultan Ismail, Kuala Lumpur, last Thursday.

Its Director General Datuk Ruslin Jusoh in a statement today said the operation team was supposed to raid the premises on the day in question based on the information received when they collided with a Perodua Myvi vehicle driven by the suspect in the parking lot.

"The suspect sped off after realizing the presence of the operation team but he was successfully intercepted.

"The result of the operation team's inspection arrested a Bangladeshi man suspected of being a 'transporter' aged around 33 along with two Bangladeshi illegal immigrants," he said.

He said further that as a result of the inspection at the residence, the operation team arrested five Bangladeshi immigrants who were found not to have any valid travel documents or passports to be in the country.

According to him, the operation team confiscated 10 Bangladeshi passports, three mobile phones, cash amounting to RM500 and a Perodua Myvi type vehicle believed to be used to transport the illegal immigrants.

Ruslin said the syndicate's modus operandi is to bring illegal immigrants, especially Bangladeshis who want to find illegal jobs in the country, by plane from Bangladesh to Vietnam, and from Vietnam they will go to Thailand by road.

"Then they will be taken by boat from Thailand to Kelantan and the local 'transporter' will take them to the residential premises in Jalan Sultan Ismail, Kuala Lumpur by car.

"They will be sent to a location of their choice after making the payment to the Bangladeshi agent in Malaysia.

"The result of the investigation found that the syndicate charged RM13,000 to RM21,000 per person, and this activity had been operating for two months," he said.

He said the 'transporter' was detained on suspicion of having committed an offense under Section 26A of the Anti-Trafficking in Persons and Migrant Smuggling Act (ATIPSOM) 2007 while the others were detained under the Immigration Act 1959/63, the Passport Act 1966, the Immigration Regulations 1963 and the Immigration Act Anti-Trafficking in Persons and Smuggling of Migrants (ATIPSOM) 2007.
