KULAI: Online fraud involving the social media platform Facebook recorded a total of 744 cases, the highest recorded since the beginning of this year until last May 25.

Deputy Minister of Communications and Digital (KKD) Teo Nie Ching said, based on a report from the Communications and Multimedia Commission (SKMM), Telegram recorded 17 cases, WhatsApp 16 cases, Instagram seven cases and email one case.

He explained that this online fraud shows the importance of cooperation between the government and platform providers so that efforts to deal with cybercrime can be implemented.

"We understand that platform providers have their own community guidelines. But KKD took the step of holding a meeting with TikTok, Facebook and Google, to ensure that illegal activities that violate the law can be acted upon as soon as possible.

"Similarly, if there is racial speech and so on, we can send a report to the platform provider, but the platform provider still uses or consults their consensus line to make a decision, whether the content will be deleted or not," he said.

He said this at a press conference after the Movie Watching Program with the Kulai Police Community, here on Sunday.

In the meantime, Nie Ching also commented on Telegram's refusal to hold a meeting with KKD due to not wanting to participate in any form of politically-related censorship.

He said the purpose of the meeting was to establish cooperation in curbing criminal activities and not of a political nature and interfering with freedom of expression.

Meanwhile, reminding politicians and the public not to abuse social media platforms by issuing statements mixed with hatred, racism and religion, especially in the run-up to State Elections (PRN) in six states.

"All parties, especially politicians, need to understand that when PRN does have competition, but not because we have an agenda and want to win, we issue statements that can have a negative impact on society.

"If it is found to violate the rules, action can be taken according to Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act," he said.

On May 31, the Deputy Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi asked the KKD and SKMM to monitor any broadcasts with racial and religious narratives instigated by politicians
