KUALA LUMPUR, March 14 -- Universiti Teknologi Petronas (UTP) and Mestron Energy Sdn Bhd (MESB) have entered into a strategic partnership to jointly develop and commercialise solar-powered lamp posts.
They have signed the Joint Development Agreement for the product, which will be equipped with a closed-circuit TV (CCTV) and artificial intelligence to enable local authorities and other users to do surveillance on safety, health and other issues more effectively and at a lower cost.
In a joint statement, UTP and Mestron Energy said the lamp post could be erected in areas without electricity supply like river banks, illegal garbage dumping sites and major street junctions which pose problems to people.
“With the power of virtual artificial intelligence, warnings via WhatsApp and short messaging service (SMS) can be channelled directly to the officer-in-charge on a real-time basis.
“These early warnings will enable prompt action to be taken by the officer-in-charge concerned,” the statement said.
It said the product is expected to be ready by May 2022 and will be marketed in Malaysia by Mestron Energy.
The lamp post can acquired via direct purchase or a seven-year lease by local authorities and other government bodies under the Islamic banking scheme.
