KUALA LUMPUR: The first positive case of the Omicron variant (VOC) has been detected in Malaysia.
Health Minister Khairy Jamaluddin in a press conference today informed that the case involved a 19-year-old non-citizen traveller who arrived from South Africa via Singapore on 19 November 2021 and had undergone a COVID-19 RT-PCR test upon arrival at PMA KLIA.
He is a student at a private university in Ipoh, Perak.
He was given a Supervision and Observation Order under Section 15 of the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases Act (Act 342) and underwent mandatory quarantine at an accommodation provided by universities in Ipoh.
His journey from KLIA to Ipoh was by a bus which was specially provided by the university.
He is under self-quarantine at the property along with five others who were on the bus and based on the investigation, he is complying with the order issued.
