PETALING JAYA: Najib Razak almost fell victim to a coup by "three Tan Sri's" who conspired with other leaders to illegally detain him while chairing a Cabinet meeting, claimed his former aide.

However, a day before the plot was implemented, Najib took several actions that thwarted the plans of the three Tan Sri's, namely, former Bank Negara (BNM) Governor Zeti Akhtar Aziz, former Attorney -General, Abdul Gani Patail and former Chief Commissioner of the Malaysian Anti -Corruption Commission (MACC). ), Abu Kassim Mohamed.

Details of the conspiracy to overthrow Najib as Prime Minister are contained in a book written by Romen Bose, which will be on the market. Bose was a former journalist and political communications adviser to Najib, from 2012 to 2018

Roman Bose

Bose, claimed that Zeti, Gani and Abu Kassim were among those involved in the plot to overthrow Najib on July 29, 2015, but to no avail.

Zeti and Gani are key members of the 1MDB Special Task Force set up to investigate allegations in Wall Street Journal and Sarawak Report articles on allegations of Najib's involvement in misappropriating state funds. Abu Kassim is the advisor of the special task force.

Other individuals allegedly involved in the coup plot included Muhyiddin Yassin, who was then Najib's deputy and Shafie Apdal as the Minister of Rural and Regional Development.

"Two days after the article appeared (using documents allegedly leaked by BNM, the Attorney -General's Chambers and MACC), a secret meeting of the task force was held to plan the removal and detention of the Prime Minister," Bose wrote, citing several sources.

“Abu Kassim is alleged to have led the push for Najib to be arrested, even though the task force did not have solid evidence to show that he (Najib) was guilty. What they have is mere speculation and intuition.

“Next, a draft charge sheet was said to have been made by Abu Kassim's office, which claimed that Najib received RM27 million in bribes along with breach of trust as an alternative charge. This was later allegedly turned into criminal misconduct, ”according to Bose in the book.

This is contrary to the norm, where the police or other enforcement agencies will complete and submit their investigation papers to the Attorney General to decide whether to prosecute.

Bose said, according to the plot, senior police officers loyal to the planning group would be stationed at the Prime Minister's Office in Perdana Putra, while officers loyal to Bukit Aman Special Branch Deputy Chief Abdul Hamid Bador would accompany Gani into the Cabinet meeting room. .

As soon as Najib arrived, Gani was to have given a few words to Cabinet members and read out the charges against Najib and announce his arrest.

Police officers were supposed to surround the meeting room and detain Najib.

According to the plan, Najib will be handcuffed and his head was to be covered with a "black bag" before being taken to a waiting police vehicle.

Bose said, under the plan, Muhyiddin would take over and chair Cabinet meeting, all ministers  were expected to pledge allegiance to him as the new Prime Minister.

Those responsible for the coup allegedly also planned to get a "a judge who can be influenced" to accept the draft charges and order Najib's immediate arrest, he said.

According to Bose, when he informed Najib of the plot against him, the Pekan MP "apparently" already knew about it, but did not act until a day before the coup was scheduled to take place.

The action involved the dismissal of several key players in the conspiracy.

“On Tuesday, civil service chief (Chief Secretary to the Government) Ali Hamsa met Gani at the Attorney -General's Chambers to inform him that he had been replaced, while Najib's security details were strengthened.

"The Prime Minister (also) informed Muhyiddin and Shafie that they will be replaced in a minor Cabinet reshuffle that will take place on the same day."

Bose was seen impressed with the way the coup was broken.

"That morning alone, some of the alleged masterminds were ousted without any violence or bloodshed, and the coup plan was foiled - Malaysian style."

Bose's book entitled "Final Reckoning: An Insider's View of the Fall of Malaysia's Barisan Nasional Government" will be on the market starting Dec 14. Early bookings can be made through this bookstore:
