PORT KLANG, Dec 24 -- The Department of Labour Peninsular Malaysia (JTKSM) today raided the dormitories of a rubber glove factory here in efforts to enforce the Workers’ Minimum Standards for Housing and Amenities Act 1990 (Act 446).
Its deputy director-general (Operations), Mohd Asri Abdul Wahab said that from the raid it was found that the dormitories of the male and female workers were built in a former warehouse, which was renovated but without any certification for use as accommodation.
He said that, during inspection, it was found that the workers were provided with triple-decker beds such that they had to use a ladder to climb to their beds.
“From the security factor, this situation is very dangerous. Almost all beds are without mattresses and a high probability that even the blankets are likely bought by the workers themselves,” he told reporters after participating in the raid.
The 10 am raid also saw participation from the Department of Occupational Safety and Health and the Klang district health office.
Mohd Asri also said that the initial investigation found that the employer did put in an effort to comply with Act 446 by maintaining cleanliness such as providing trash cans and so on but there are still many other matters stipulated in the act that they need to comply with so that the accommodation will be comfortable.
Therefore, he said, the company was urged to comply with the conditions stipulated under Act 446 by providing comfortable accommodation to employees for their well-being and safety.
