PONTIAN: Campaigning for the Tanjung Piai by-election ramps up with a mega ceramah by MCA in Pekan Nanas here drawing a huge crowd.

Several party bigwigs made their presence felt and mingled with the people before giving speeches during the ceramah next to Pasar Awam Pekan Nanas on Saturday (Nov 9).

Before the start of the ceramah, a party-like atmosphere was already in the air as a group of line dancers were seen entertaining the growing crowd around 7.30pm.

By 8pm when MCA Youth chief Nicole Wong Siaw Ting made her speech, most of the seats were filled up while many others were standing at the side and back of the compound.

Barisan candidate Datuk Seri Dr Wee Jeck Seng arrived around 8.40pm and received a hero's welcome with loud cheers and whistles from the crowd of over 500 people.

Flanked by party bigwigs such as president Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong, deputy president Datuk Dr Mah Hang Soon, vice-president Datuk Lim Ban Hong, secretary-general Datuk Chong Sin Woon, Wanita chief Datuk Heng Seai Kie and Wong, Jeck Seng addressed the boisterous crowd and urged for their support.

Other party leaders who spoke at the ceramah included Kluang MCA chairman Gan Ping Sieu.

During his speech, Dr Wee (Ka Siong) lambasted a Pakatan Harapan campaign banner for claiming credit over the Rapid Transit System (RTS) project.

"The banner claimed that Barisan works for cronies and Pakatan works for the people.

"It must be noted that RTS was started during Barisan's time. How shameful it is for them to claim credit," he said.

Criticising Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad's flying car, third national car and crooked bridge projects, the MCA president questioned if these projects were what "works for the people" transpired to.

"That is why we need projects such as RTS and LRT3 that can ease traffic congestion in the country," he said, adding that it was sad that the Klang Valley MRT Line 3 (MRT3) was not revived.

As the only MCA MP in Parliament, Dr Wee also vowed to remain vocal in highlighting the people's concerns.

"The government of the day is too powerful and reckless. I need another comrade in Parliament to give greater check and balance to the government.

"One more voice means greater strength in Parliament.

"Let us play our roles. That's what Jeck Seng and I want to do," he added.
