PETALING JAYA: The transition plan with Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad is a done deal, says Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

The PKR president said he had no doubt that the transition will go according to plan, following his weekly private meetings with the Prime Minister.

"He (Dr Mahathir) has been very genuine and frank … The discussion has not only been frank but intimate.

"However, I don't think it is necessary for us to share the issues that we agreed between us.

The issue of power transition has been brought to the fore recently as no formal timeframe has been set for it to happen.

However, the 93-year-old Dr Mahathir has repeatedly said that he would abide by his promise to hand over the premiership to Anwar.

Last February, Anwar said he expected to be prime minister in no more than two years' time, adding that Dr Mahathir must be given enough space to govern effectively during "very difficult and trying times".

At the meeting, the PKR central leadership reiterated that it is satisfied with the transition plan as contained in the 'Muafakat Pakatan Harapan' document which was agreed to by all top Pakatan Harapan leaders on Jan 7 during the coalition's convention.

"PKR stressed that it will continue to support Dr Mahathir's leadership and Cabinet to continue efforts to lead the economy, implement institutional reforms and protect the security of the nation," said the Permatang Pauh MP.

PETALING JAYA: Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad will step down and hand over the premiership to PKR president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim as promised – and this should no longer be questioned, says Datuk Seri Shamsul Iskandar Mohd Akin.

Referring to a Bloomberg interview with Dr Mahathir recently, the PKR information chief said he was amused by how there were always questions about the transition of power, even when it had already been discussed and agreed on.

"All parties in the ruling coalition have agreed to the transition and won the last general election on this platform, among others.

"The Prime Minister has also reiterated time and again his commitment to honour the agreement.

Shamsul, who is also Hang Tuah Jaya MP, said instead of being caught up on whether or not the transition would happen, everyone should focus be on delivering the promises made in Pakatan Harapan's GE14 manifesto.

He said constant politicking and unabating questions on the leadership transition would only undermine efforts and give further rise to extreme politics.

"In the face of challenges from extreme identity politics, only continuous improvement to the well-being of all Malaysians and enhancement of our overall economy can ensure the survival of our democratic politics," he added.
