KUALA LUMPUR: The Attorney General’s Chambers is seeking to postpone Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) trial, which is scheduled to start on Aug 19.

Attorney General Tommy Thomas, who appeared before High Court judge Justice Collin Lawrence Sequerah, said this was because Najib’s SRC International trial was still ongoing.

He said the SRC trial was moving slower than expected.

“What I can tell the court is that over 40 people have testified in the SRC International case, and we are calling 25 more,” Thomas said.

He added that there was no way his SRC International prosecution team would be able to wrap up the case by Aug 15 and allow the 1MDB prosecution team to take over on Aug 19.

He suggestedthat the 1MDB trial be postponed to Oct 1.

Justice Sequerah, however, told the Attorney General to come back on July 15 with an update on the progress of the SRC International case.

“You can come back on July 15, so you will be in a better position to speak about the progress,” he said.

Najib has been charged with four counts of using his position to attain gratification for himself as a public officer, namely prime minister, finance minister and 1MDB chairman.

The Pekan MP also faces 21 allegations of money laundering under the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds from Unlawful Activities Act 2001 (Amla), involving 1MDB funds amounting to RM2.28bil.
