PUTRAJAYA: Datuk Seri Azmin Ali does not need to take leave from his duties as the Economic Affairs Minister, while the police investigate a sex video implicating him, says the Prime Minister.

When asked on calls for Azmin to take leave, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad said: “Why? They (police) can continue with the investigation.

“He (Azmin) is not going to be an obstruction to the investigation,” Dr Mahathir said to reporters at the Prime Minister’s Department Hari Raya open house on Thursday (June 20).

When asked on previous calls by Pakatan Harapan for Barisan Nasional ministers to take leave or resign when there was an investigation, Dr Mahathir said if the probe was over some wrongdoings or crime, the person should take leave.

“But this is a political thing. In fact, it is intended to embarrass him (Azmin) and to ask him to take leave.

“I don’t like this kind of political (play),” he said.

In the past week, clips of video involving two men have gone viral, followed by a confession by Santubong PKR youth chief Haziq Abdullah Abdul Aziz that he was one of the two men in the view.

Haziq, who is principle private secretary to deputy Primary Industries minister Datuk Seri Shamsul Iskandar Md Akin, claimed the other person was Azmin.

Azmin had categorically denied the allegation, saying it was made to tarnish his reputation and destroy his political career.

Among those who had called for Azmin to quit is Farhash Wafa Salvador Rizal Mubarak, who is political secretary to PKR president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
