Two suspects caught on video assaulting the Pakistani.
KOTA KINABALU: City police have arrested two men who were captured on video attacking a Pakistani shop owner and his local wife near their shop here.
A clip lasting more than four minutes, which has gone viral on social media, shows the men setting upon the Pakistani, beating and stomping on him before switching their attention to the woman who tried to stop the attack.
Acting city police chief George Abd Rakman said police are looking for three other suspects involved in the violent attack at the Api-Api Centre here at 1am on June 2.
He said the Pakistani, 33, and his cousin had earlier met up with the owner of the apartment the cousin was renting to discuss rental payment issues. The apartment owner was accompanied by three women and a man.
One of the women took out a camera phone and started recording the conversation. This agitated the Pakistani who told her to stop filming because it was, according to him, worsening the situation.
Instead of stopping, the woman retaliated and berated the man, he added. The woman lying sprawled on the floor after being hit from behind.
“Several minutes later, four men, including the father and brother of the apartment owner, arrived and charged at the Pakistani’s 42-year-old cousin,” George said.
The Pakistani then tried to break up the commotion but was himself assaulted by the group.
He tried to run back to the shop nearby for help but was brought down by his assailants. The group continued to attack him.
“The wife, 31, had by chance come down from their apartment above and saw the attack.
“She also attempted to break up the attack but three of the men, without any mercy, beat her up and also kicked her when she was on the ground,” he said.
Following the incident, George said police picked up the two suspects, aged 67 and 37, on Tuesday. They will be charged in court tomorrow for rioting.
Efforts are on-going to track down the remaining suspects, he said, urging those with information to contact the investigating officer Palani Nathan Pathmanathan at 016-412 2835.

KOTA KINABALU: Three people were badly beaten up by a group of people over a misunderstanding on rental payment here.
A CCTV recording of the incident was leaked and circulated in various social media platforms including Facebook and WhatsApp.
The three victims were a 33-year-old Pakistani businessman, his 31-year-old local wife and his 42-year-old cousin who had met up with their landlord's agent prior to the June 2 incident.
Kota Kinabalu acting police chief Supt George Abd Rakman said when the businessman was talking to the agent named Supri, three women and a man - the owner of the rented apartment unit - arrived and approached him.
Seeing that, the businessman asked if she could stop recording because it seemed like a provocative action.
“The woman recording the meeting then allegedly shouted and cursed, resulting in a heated argument among them,” Supt George said, adding the 1am commotion attracted a large crowd.
Several minutes later, four more men comprising the apartment owner’s father and brothers arrived, and they allegedly went straight to the businessman’s cousin and punched him in the face.
The businessman, who was talking to Supri, immediately went to his cousin’s aid to break off the fight, but he was allegedly beaten up as well.
Supt George said the businessman ran off towards his shop nearby but he was chased and was allegedly beaten up again.
“His wife ran to help him and she was allegedly punched and kicked,” he said.
Policemen later arrived at the scene and urged the parties to lodge a report on the matter.
Following a police report, two local men from Sandakan aged 67 and 37 were nabbed on June 4 and will be charged at the Kota Kinabalu court on Friday (June 7) with rioting.
Supt George said they are hunting for three more people believed to be involved in the case.
