NGO lodges report against celebrity Aliff Syukri for caning his daughter

PETALING JAYA: A non-governmental organisation has lodged a police report against Malaysian celebrity Datuk Aliff Syukri for caning his nine-year-old daughter who removed her hijab, saying that this constitutes an act of physical abuse.
The report was lodged on Tuesday (April 30) by Protect and Save The Children (P.S. The Children), a member of the Child Rights Coalition Malaysia (CRCM), at the Petaling Jaya district police headquarters.
The CRCM, which issued a statement on Tuesday (April 30), said that they were extremely disturbed by his actions.
In a recent social media post last week, the cosmetics entrepreneur uploaded a video of himself applying medication on his daughter's back after punishing her.
"He publicly humiliated his child online by video recording himself applying medication to her wounded back while she appeared to be in distress, and uploaded the footage on his Instagram for his 3.1 million followers," it added.
CRCM also said that Aliff had taken disciplining children "to new heights and extremes" and even justified his allegedly abusive actions.
"His caning of his daughter constitutes egregious physical abuse and is an offence under Section 31 of the Child Act, as well as under the Domestic Violence Act.
"Such conduct also violates his daughter's rights under the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, which Malaysia acceded to in 1995, and the principles of which we are obligated to uphold," the CRCM said.
It called for the police and the Welfare Department to "take swift and thorough action to investigate the matter and charge Datuk Syukri appropriately for his violations of existing laws".
The post, which contained a one-minute video, has since gained 881,934 views, 67,408 likes and 3,685 comments as at 8.39pm on Tuesday.
In his caption, the Malaysian celebrity said: "My daughter is given the best care."
"Forgive me, I love you very much, but this is all for your future.
"Today I caned you because I want you to understand that a woman has to protect her dignity," he said.
Aliff said his daughter "had a habit" of removing her hijab in front of unknown men.
"Maybe she doesn't understand because she is still young, but because of this I have to teach her to know her limits ... and cover her aurat (parts of the body not supposed to be exposed in public).
"I want my daughter to be the best, well-versed in religion and to have self-respect. Hopefully she has learned her lesson," he said.
The post gained mixed reactions, with some saying that the incident was not acceptable.
One commenter, natarifar said: "This is so wrong! Hitting her and causing her to be in pain is not acceptable and no way will nurture her to be a respectable woman. There are ethics in educating children and this is definitely not the way."
Another comment by atheelamel reads: "You're hurting her physically and mentally, what you're doing is child abuse."
