PETALING JAYA: The national diving team is in the news again for the wrong reasons.

Videos have surfaced on Facebook of the divers allegedly consuming alcohol during their training camp in Guangzhou, China.


The videos, which allegedly showed the senior divers in the Podium Programme and also the juniors, were shot during the Chinese New Year in February this year.

This development casts a question mark on the preparation of the national diving team for the upcoming Asian Games in Indonesia in August, especially where the divers are expected to contribute medals.


Acting head coach Zhang Yukun said he had no knowledge at all of the incident but will leave it to the Amateur Swimming Union of Malaysia (Asum) to get to the bottom of the matter.

"I am surprised this happened. I leave it to the National Sports Council and Asum to take the necessary actions," said the Chinese coach on Tuesday (June 19) night.

The diving camp was rocked by rape allegations involving one of the divers late last year.

Chinese coach Huang Qiang, who represented the country at the 2012 London Olympics, was charged in court but acquitted recently.

However, the damage was already done, as NSC had terminated the services of Yang Zhuliang despite producing a world champion diver in Cheong Jun Hoong and two Olympic medallists (Pandelela Rinong and Jun Hoong).

Zhuliang's contract was not renewed when it ended in December last year.

After Zhuliang's departure, Australian coach Christian Brooker was brought in to jointly handle the team with Yukun and another Chinese coach Li Teng
