Personal data of Astro customers being sold online

PETALING JAYA: The personal data of Astro customers have been offered for sale online, claims Lowyat.net.
The technology news portal said on Wednesday (June 6) that the data was being sold for RM4,500 for 10,000 records, or RM0.45 per record.
The seller was offering 60,000 Astro IPTV customer details, including their names, installation address, identity card number, mobile phone number, equipment and portal ID numbers, as well as subscribed package information.
Lowyat.net had stumbled upon the same person selling 50,000 records back in January, although at that time it was being sold for RM3,000 for 10,000 records.
It claims that it notified Astro about the data breach back then, with Astro supposedly assuring them that they took the protection of customer data seriously.
Lowyat.net claims it has also alerted the relevant authorities about its findings.
"We are once again calling out to all organizations who handle personal data to ensure that they exercise due care and diligence in ensuring the safety of the personal data that has been entrusted to them," said Lowyat.net.
In October 2017, the personal details of some 46.2 million mobile number subscribers in Malaysia were leaked online in what is believed to be one of the largest data breaches ever seen in the country.
Efforts by The Star to reach Astro are ongoing.
