KUALA LUMPUR: Celebrity entrepreneurs have called for more stringent law enforcement against the sale of fake items.

Noor Neelofa Mohd Noor, the founder of Naelofar Hijab, said a lot of agencies produced duplicate items, adding that there was a need to monitor them.

“We have cooperated with the Ministry of Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism and the Customs but it is really costly for us to continue to tackle the problem.

“So, I have suggested cooperating with the Companies Commission of Malaysia (SSM) to shut down accounts that sell fake items when reports on these agencies have been lodged,” she told reporters after meeting the Council of Eminent Persons (CEP) at Ilham Tower today.

Noor Neelofa also called for easier access to funding, documentation and information for entrepreneurs.

Meanwhile, Vivy Sofinas Yusof, the co-founder of FashionValet and dUCK Group, who also met CEP, complained about imitation goods from Vietnam and China being sold in the Malaysian market.

“We have asked what the Customs can do about that because, right now, anybody can bring any fake item into the country and this hurts the local entrepreneurs,” she said.

Vivy also mentioned the inability of some Malaysians entrepreneurs to speak English, saying they would lack confidence and self-esteem and this handicapped them in moving forward.

“Something needs to be done to build up their confidence,” she added.
