KLANG: Sungai Tua assemblyman Amirudin Shari is the most likely candidate to replace Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali as the new menteri besar.

Amirudin, 38, was seen entering Istana Alam Shah at around 5.30pm here today, a day before the official swearing-in ceremony for the new menteri besar, which will take place at 10am tomorrow.

He was all smiles when he left the palace at 6.30pm.

Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah’s private secretary Datuk Mohamad Munir Bani was seen leaving the palace five minutes later.

Amirudin and Ijok assemblyman Dr Idris Ahmad, 71, have been identified as the frontrunners for the MB post.

Both of them are also members of the state executive council (exco), while Dr Idris is an Australia-trained obstetrician and gynaecologist.

Amirudin, when contacted by the NSTP earlier this morning appeared to be in a good and happy mood.

Asked if he would be going to the palace for a rehearsal for the swearing-in ceremony, he said: “If we can wait for three weeks (for the candidate to be announced), we can wait for another 24 hours.

“(There is) nothing until afternoon. (Will be at the palace) in the evening.”

Asked further if he was the sole candidate for the MB post, Amirudin declined to comment further and merely replied “Tomorrow I (will) confirm.”

He could not be obtained for comments while leaving the palace. His car sped off when approached by reporters, but he waved to reporters here.

Contacted via Whatsapp over the possibility of his appointment , Amirudin replied: “Sorry my driver just started work today. We will meet tomorrow,” he said in jest.

Meanwhile, Dr Idris when contacted at around 6pm said he was at home and did not receive any information about his possible appointment as the new Selangor MB.

A palace source said: “No rehearsal was held at the palace today, only preparations for tomorrow’s event took place.”

Azmin, who is still the MB, had previously hinted that his successor may be picked from the ready exco lineup.

Azmin became the MB in 2014 when Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim stepped down after the MB crisis.

On May 18 this year, Azmin was appointed as the Economic Affairs Minister by the Pakatan Harapan-led government.

Following his appointment to the Cabinet, several names have cropped up as possible candidate for the MB post.

Earlier today, Azmin submitted the name of his potential successor to the Sultan of Selangor for his consent.
