KOTA KINABALU: An Indonesian family of seven and two Malaysian masterminds involved in the issuance of fake MyKad were nabbed during a six-hour sting operation by the National Registration Department (NRD) in Tawau.
The family, including a pair of twin brothers, apparently acted as agents in the sale of the fake identity cards to the large migrant population in Tawau, Semporna and Kunak.
The family members, aged between 20 and 60, were arrested at their home in Kampung Tanjung Batu in Tawau.
The Malaysian masterminds are aged 45 and 50.
Describing it as the biggest bust involving fake IC syndicates in the state, NRD investigations and enforcement director Mohamad Yusri Hashim said they also seized 29 fake MyKads, RM3,839, two vehicles, and equipment to take fingerprints of the applicants.
They also seized US$17,100 (RM76, 531) and RM200, believed to be fake notes.
“There were also bank cards, driving licences, eight mobile phones, a book containing up to 500 names of fake MyKad applicants and bank receipts for tens of thousands of ringgit,” he told reporters yesterday after the night operation ended,
He said the syndicates were believed to have sold these fake identity cards for about RM1,500 to the lower-end market and RM10,000 to RM15,000 for the higher-end market, comprising those who wanted Malaysian documents.
He said the latest arrest was a follow-up to the busting of a similar syndicate in Sandakan last month.
Mohamad Yusri said police assisted in the NRD operation, which began at around 9pm Wednesday and ended at 3am yesterday.
