KUALA LUMPUR: Sri Lanka's High Commissioner to Malaysia, Ibrahim Sahib Ansar, was assaulted by a group of people at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport this evening (Sunday).

Sri Lanka's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in a statement tonight, condemned the act of violence "in the strongest terms."

"The High Commission of Sri Lanka in Kuala Lumpur is coordinating with local law enforcement authorities in Malaysia and other relevant local authorities to identify perpetrators and assist with investigations.

"The Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Sri Lanka is taking all necessary action in this regard through diplomatic channels," read the statement.

The High Commissioner has been given medical attention.

Ibrahim was at KLIA to send off Sri Lankan Primary Industries Minister, Daya Gamage, who had attended the International Conference of Asian Political Parties, in Kuala Lumpur.

Former Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa had also attended the conference.

His attendance had drawn protests and saw demonstrations held.

Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar confirmed the assault.

"Police are now tracking down the perpetrators," he said.
