KUALA LUMPUR: Former aircraft cabin cleaner, Ahmad Najib Aris was hanged to death at dawn today for murdering IT analyst Canny Ong Lay Kian about 13 years ago. Local Malay daily, Utusan reported the execution was carried out at Kajang Prison and his body will be laid to rest at the Muslim Cemetery behind Kajang Hospital.

According to a source, his family members just found out about it from the prison personnel and further said Ahmad Najib’s mother could not come to the prison as she is bedridden at home.

On October 21, 2009, Ahmad Najib failed to obtain the Federal Court’s permission to review his conviction and death sentence against him saying the evidence were strong enough to convict 40-year-old Ahmad Najib for murdering 29-year-old Canny Ong.

Ahmad Najib failed to revoke the hanging to death decision by the Shah Alam High Court, Court of Appeal and Federal Court. Other than the death sentence, the courts also retained the maximum 20 years of imprisonment and 10 lashes for raping the victim.

He committed those crimes between 1 and 5 in the morning on June 14, 2003 at Batu 7, Old Klang Road, Petaling Jaya.

The trial back in 2005, which was given wide publicity, stunned the nation with horrific details of abduction, rape, murder and the dumping of Canny's body into a manhole before it was torched. A DNA test had been conducted confirming Ahmad Najib's semen in Ong's vagina which proved that he had intercourse with the victim.

Meanwhile the defence attorney representing Ahmad Najib, Mohamed Haniff Khatri Abdulla told reporters that it is not an obligation for the prison personnel to inform lawyers about the execution as the case proceedings had been concluded.

He further added neither of Ahmad Najib’s family members told him about the execution as well.
